Opportunities for hydrogen and PtX in Australia
Join Hydrogen Denmark and the Danish Embassy in Australia for this one-hour webinar on June 26th from 9:00-10:00 CET.
Australia is rapidly emerging as one of the global leaders in Power-to-X (locally called green hydrogen), offering significant opportunities for international investors, technology providers, and project developers.
Program for the webinar:
– Welcome by Hydrogen Denmark and Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark
– Progress of hydrogen in Australia with Fiona Simon, CEO of Australian Hydrogen Council
– Funding for hydrogen with David Spence, DCCEEW (Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water)
– The Danish-Australian Green Hydrogen Partnership with Niels Rytter, Head of Section at SDU
– Q&A
Registration: Opportunities for hydrogen and PtX in Australia
National Hydrogen Strategy (updated in 2024):
Sets out a vision for a clean, innovative and globally competitive hydrogen industry.
The new strategy focuses on Australia’s most prospective hydrogen sectors: green metals (iron, alumina), green ammonia and long-haul heavy transport.
Targets up to 15 million tonnes of hydrogen production by 2050, with interim milestones and a focus on export and domestic decarbonisation.
Emphasizes trade, investment, and partnerships, including with Europe.
Hydrogen Production Tax Incentive (HPTI):
Introduced in 2025, provides a refundable tax offset of AUD $2 per kilogram of renewable hydrogen produced between 2027 and 2040, up to ten years per project.
Designed to make Australia’s hydrogen cost-competitive internationally.
Hydrogen Headstart Program:
AUD $4 billion in total funding to support large-scale renewable hydrogen projects through production credits.
First round awarded AUD $814 million to the CIP project called Murchison Green Hydrogen (1,5 GW electrolyser in first stage), with more funding rounds expected
Why Australia?
World-class renewable resources: Vast land, strong wind and solar, and deep water ports for export.
Political stability and transparent regulation: Australia is recognized for its stable investment climate and clear regulatory framework.
Strong government backing: Multi-billion dollar incentives and policy certainty (Federal Government has just been re-elected for another 3 years).
Growing export partnerships: Active collaboration with Europe and Asia, including dedicated export auctions.
Local offtake opportunities: Australia has a world leading mining sector and especially green steel/iron is a major opportunity for the country.
Australia’s hydrogen sector is open for business, with world-leading policy support, major funding opportunities, and a clear need for international expertise and technology. Danish companies are well positioned to partner in Australia’s hydrogen growth story.
